Description: Some call them Fruitrats, some say Ratfruit, either way, this small rodent resembles the pinecones that hang from the branches of the northern arbuscula. These northern arbuscula actively seek out and try to collect fruitrats on themselves, because they eat the parasites, fungi, and annoying birds that try to nest into their bark.

When a predator sees through the camouflage, however, the fruitrat is usually out of luck. They play dead and hope that the prickly barbs on its body will be enough to dissuade animals from eating it. It becomes completely passive, as its large body is slow to move on the ground and it isn't usually flexible enough to manage a bite. The back legs have even evolved so small that they barely function.

The front paws of the fruitrat, however, can extend fairly far. That, combined with the long, muscular tail that can pull the rodent up to the branch and down quickly, make the fruitrat a formidable hunter of small birds and insects.

Surprisingly, however, fruitrat make great, loving pets, and they are about as intelligent as dogs. Some people use birdcages to keep them.
